Grand jete into the Holiday season with CDA's The Nutcracker! A joyous tradition for the whole family.
Join Clara and her friends on December 2nd and 3rd as they take us on a wondrous journey from a festive family party to a magical kingdom filled with sweets and treats!
Our story takes place in 1921 on Christmas Eve in New York City. Clara is looking forward to being reunited with friends and family at her parents’ annual Christmas party. She is especially excited to see her favourite cousin Tania who will be coming home for the holidays after a trip abroad.
The party begins and Clara and Fritz eagerly greet their guests. Clara enjoys time with her cousins, while the parents mingle and Fritz chats with the boys. Later, Fritz and his friends play a prank on Clara offering her a beautifully wrapped present…which turns out to be nothing more than a mangy, stuffed rat!
Soon cousin Tania arrives with some exciting news. She is engaged to be married and has brought her fiancé Frederick to meet her family and join the celebration!
Uncle Drosselmeyer arrives next. Having spent hours in his toyshop preparing for the holiday season, he is happy to be reunited with family and friends. After entertaining guests with magical surprises, Drosselmeyer gives eager Fritz a new slingshot and a brightly painted toy soldier. For Clara, the toymaker has something much more intriguing…a Nutcracker carved in the shape of a Prince!
Amid the excitement of the party, Clara plays with her new Nutcracker doll. Fritz, jealous that Clara received such a fancy gift, snatches it from her, breaking the poor Nutcracker’s arm. Heartbroken, Clara cannot hold back her tears. Eager to please his new relatives, a sympathetic Frederick does his best to mend the broken Nutcracker.
As the party ends, the guests depart and the household retires for the night. Clara cannot forget the broken Nutcracker. She creeps back downstairs to check on him once more. Clara tiptoes over to the present where the broken Nutcracker was safely stowed. Satisfied that all is well, she curls up on a chair and falls asleep...
